Logan resident is first Queenslander to complete national internship program

A Logan City resident has become the first Queenslander to complete the new national Transition to Work intern program and, and a result, has secured full-time work at All Purpose Transport in Berrinba.

Liam Alder successfully completed an eight-week internship at All Purpose Transport, as part of a partnership approach with yourtown to create pathways to employment for young Logan City jobseekers.

Transition to Work helps young people to understand workplace requirements and develop the skills, attitudes and behaviours expected by employers. Work experience is included to help build participants' skills, confidence and readiness to find a job.

As part of the initiative, All Purpose Transport General Manager Paul Kahlert and Project Manager Belinda Polglase, interviewed 25 applicants from yourtown in June.

“We were impressed by the calibre of applicants. We met some enthusiastic and motivated young people, and offered internships to two of them, with the opportunity for a successful candidate to gain full-time employment,” Mr Kahlert said.

“The internship started with the basics of warehouse housekeeping and progressed to picking orders and loading trucks. The program was demanding, as work included hand sweeping our 11,000m2 warehouse and removing rubbish around the office and warehouse – all while learning our warehouse operations,” Mr Kahlert said.

One of the candidates elected to discontinue the program, with Liam going on to successfully completing the eight-week program. He is now employed full-time as a storeman at All Purpose Transport.

Mr Kahlert thanked his team for their commitment to the program, which has now moved to a second round of internships. “A big thanks to some special people who got involved in the program, especially our warehouse supervisor Harley Baker, who took a mentoring role in teaching Liam what takes to be a great storeman.”
